Messages from Manor

Dear Parents and Carers

It was great to see such a full church for Harvest Festival today. The children sang their hearts out and there was a fabulous collection of produce for the foodbank thanks to your generosity. It was a very wholesome experience for all despite the tightly packed pews! A lovely way to send everyone off for a half-term break after 8 weeks of school... the longest block of school we will get through the year. The children and staff are certainly ready for a bit of a reset and refresh. We hope you all have a great week!

New Staff

We are pleased to announce that we have finally been able to appoint a new lunchtime supervisor. Kathryn Malcolm has joined our lunchtime team with an official start after half term. She has been so keen that she has been in all this week learning the ropes. Thank you to all of the other staff who have pulled together as the amazing team they are, to plug the gap and make sure that lunchtimes have run smoothly while we were short staffed. Hopefully they will manage more of a lunch break from now on!

You may have also noticed a couple of young faces appearing with Mr Culff and Mr Lloyd on the playground in the last week or so. We have two associate teachers who have placements starting next half term - Miss Ennis in Swans and Miss Waheed in Owls - and have been doing their preliminary visits.

We know you will give all our new staff a warm welcome to the Manor family!

E-Safety with Swiggle

The internet is a wonderful tool that we want children to be able to access for all it's benefits such as learning and fun. It can also have a darker side that we need to protect our children from. Getting this balance right is never easy but SWGFL have developed a search engine for children that can help filter out unwanted adult content from children's searches. Why not try it on the below link...

PTA Christmas FairImage result for free pta image

The PTA are into their second year and their confidence is growing. They have even decided to take on the organisation of a Christmas Fair! The poster advertising it with further detail is at the end of the Newsletter. If you have a bit of time you could offer, either in advance of the Fair or on the evening of the Fair, please do use the QR code to volunteer on the PTA website. Make sure to mark the date in your diaries. We have heard tell of mulled wine and a visit from the Big Guy in red; what more could you ask for!

Governor Vacancies

We have an excellent group of governors but have been running with a couple of vacancies for a while now. We have staff and parent governor positions filled but could do with a couple more 'co-opted' governors. These could be local people with the best interests of the school at heart who want to give a bit back to the community. They might be relatives or friends of families with children at the school. No specialist knowledge or skills are needed. Simply being able to listen and ask questions to provide challenge and support to the leadership in the school is what is important. If you know anyone with the time and desire to get involved, please do ask them to get in touch with the school..

Parent Forum

Today was the first parent forum meeting of the year, and it was great to see and hear from parents who gave their views on different aspects of school with lots of praise and constructive criticism.

One area that came up was around behaviour in school.

The behaviour of children in Manor has always been exemplary but staff have noticed an increase in the low level disruptive behaviour at the start of this year. This is something that was picked up in our Fierté review recently and staff have made a concerted effort across school to clamp down on this to prevent it getting in the way of learning or causing accidents. This has meant a reduction in tolerance to behaviour such as repeatedly talking in class, moving around the classroom without permission, rough play such as grabbing hold of each other etc. Children still get warnings and final warnings before getting a yellow card but teachers are following through more with giving yellow and then red cards if it continues.

Staff have also worked on the small routines and expectations such as how we get children's attention, how children enter a classroom or transition from carpet to chairs etc. We have agreed more consistent approaches so we have the same high expectations of all children anywhere in school.

This raising of expectation has seen more teachers following through with yellow cards and parent forum reported noticing this at home. Our yellow cards are not necessarily reported to parents but red cards are. This is partly to make workload for staff manageable and also to maintain a clear differential between the level of a yellow (warning) card and a red card. If there is behaviour that we feel parents need to know about, teachers will have either spoken to you already at parents' evening or will let you know in the future, so if they haven't spoken to you, rest assured that there is nothing of concern to communicate.

This new approach over the past few weeks has had a clear impact in all classes and with most children.

Behaviour at Manor overall is still excellent and the children are all kind and caring. There is no malicious or worrying behaviour. We just want to keep those very high standards so all children are able to learn and be safe at playtimes.

Another topic at Parents Forum was around parking, especially at events such as the discos this week. Parents agreed there was little the school could do on a day-to-day basis, but some parents did then volunteer to put some cones out which worked really well to keep the access clear from the church to behind New Row. Please do continue to park considerately as Mrs Everett has to field regular phone calls from disgruntled neighbours who can't get access to or from their houses. Thank you.

If you have any items for the Parent Forum agenda for the next meeting which is to be held at 9-10am on Friday 7th February 2025, please either drop a note in to the school office or email Mr Robson on headteacher@manor.fierte.org

Reception Admissions

The application process for a reception place for September 2025 will open on 01 November 2024. The easiest way for parents to apply is online:

www.staffordshire.gov.uk/admissions

The closing date is 15 January 2025.

If you know of anyone who is looking for a Reception place for September 2025, do send them our way. We have already had a large proportion of those looking round saying they have heard good things about Manor from other parents whose child already attends here!

Cross Country

More fabulous running, this time from our Year 6 team. The weather was great and the boys were first to go on their two laps around the edges of Rawlett playing fields. A total of 1600 metres or about a mile.Image result for free cross country image

Cole and Jovan kept a steady pace all the way round and came a very respectable 18th and 16th out of a field of about 80 to 90 of the best runners accross the Tamworth schools.

Next, it was Evie's turn against a similar-sized field of girls. She showed great grit and determination to keep going and finished in 12th place. All three children made us very proud with their Manor Values of resilience and sporting aspiration.

School Council

The reward day for the whole school chosen by school council and House Captains was great fun with lots of mini-teachers and rather outsized pupils attending yesterday.

School council have also planned for a 'low or no electricity day' after half-term. Teachers will be encouraged to avoid the use of screens for lessons and lights will be turned off whenever possible etc. Hopefully, they can set some good habits to save energy that might spill over into the home too!

Staffing Levels

A couple of teachers reported some concerns from parents at parents' evening around the reductions we have had in number of staff employed at Manor. It is true that several staff left last year for other posts and we only replaced a small proportion of their hours.

We are not able to go into specifics of the budget in school but there has been a reduction in our funding due to a wide range of factors.

Two of the clearest reasons for this are, firstly, the number of pupils in Manor. This had fallen when the census that this budget is set on was taken. The numbers have crept back up a bit at Manor ready for the next census and future budgets, but there is still a low birth rate in the area and lots of schools have the issue of falling pupil numbers.

Secondly, there have been children with extra funding due to their needs who have now left the school so the funding goes with them. In recent times we have had two full time teaching assistants funded by this who were there to support those pupils.

There are many other reasons for the purse strings being tight, but these are two key areas. In the past we have been spoilt with an abundance of teaching assistants, far more than many schools and more than our current budget can afford. We also have low levels of pupil premium children compared with many schools.

We are still lucky to have a very experienced teaching staff and excellent teaching assistants. The ratio of teaching assistants compares favourably when we benchmark it against other schools and children who need support will invariably get it, whether from the teacher or the TA. It is always a worry when there are changes and adjustments such as this, but it is actually a move towards more normal staffing levels from a false period of high staffing that could no longer be sustained.

We are grateful for the support we get from the PTA and other sources which allow us to get the extra luxuries and fun bits and pieces that we would possibly have to do without otherwise. Thankfully, our pupil numbers are creeping back up, and we may be able to increase TA hours again in the future.
