Shading 101

Owls Class were introduced today to shading within their art topic. They were shown how best to grip and use a pencil for shading and were very good at replicating the "shading grip" of a pencil. Children worked on creating darker and lighter tones and touched upon 3d objects and where the shadows might lie depending on incoming light. The class were focussing on 4 main rules throughout the lesson on good shading: 1. Try to use only one direction at a time. 2. Try not to leave any gaps 3. Keep those edges neat 4. aim for smooth, even tones (using a tissue or finger to smudge slightly if needed. Children will be using the skill of shading throughout the next 4 weeks to complete some botanical based drawings.
