Research Skills in Writing and History

In Penguins Class, we believe that research skills are key to both English and History learning. This week, our students have been busy applying these skills in exciting ways across two subjects!

In History, students took on the role of young historians, diving into a historical enquiry by evaluating the achievements of the Vikings . They used a range of sources – from books and online articles to videos and photographs – to gather information about trading, settling, exploring, travelling, war and innovations. They learned how to ask key questions, look for reliable facts, and consider different viewpoints, just like real researchers!

In our English lessons, after studying the text 'Rain Player' by David Wisniewski, the children have  researched  facts about the Mayans ready for next week, when they will learn how to organise their ideas to ensure their writing has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Next week, they will also focus on using interesting vocabulary and precise details to bring their work to life, all while remembering to give credit to the sources they used.

These tasks require students to develop both historical enquiry skills, such as questioning and analysing sources, and English skills like skimming, scanning and note-taking. It’s been a week of growth, curiosity, and discovery – and we’re so proud of their efforts!

Keep up the great work, Penguins!
